Dr. Waldert Rivera-Saez,  VP of Health Affairs and Wellness
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Puerto Rico. There, he earned a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Public Communications and a minor in cultural anthropology and communication theory. In 1990, he moved to the United States to complete his doctoral studies in medical anthropology.  This is where he began his work with disadvantaged communities, developing with a group of community leaders in the city of Chelsea, Massachusetts, El Centro Latino de Chelsea. This organization was developed to provide medical, social, legal, and educational services to thousands of Latino immigrants who arrived to the city in the early 90’s.  Waldert, still in his 20’s, thus became the youngest Chief Executive Officer on a non-profit organization in the state.  Upon completing his studies, and in order to complete his doctoral dissertation, he decided to accept the position of Co-Director of the “Partners in Health” program at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire.   This program was designed to provide clinical and psychosocial services and support to children with special health care needs and their families using the modality of pediatric medical homes and enhanced care coordination. In addition, Rivera-Saez was invited to join the Pediatrics Faculty at Dartmouth to conduct research on the areas of clinical outcomes and family centered care for children with chronic conditions.

In 2001, Waldert returned to Puerto Rico to serve as General Coordinator of the newly inaugurated Office for the Coordination and Integration of Community Services at the Department of Health. This office was established as part of the local government mandate to foster the creation of disease prevention and health promotion programs focused on the needs and priorities of disadvantaged communities. This general office goes quickly to become the new Assistant Secretariat of Health Promotion, under which Waldert served as Assistant Secretary of Health. At that time, he continued to teach graduate courses at Ponce Medical School.  As Assistant Secretary of Health, he was in charge of developing and implementing several national public health programs and policies that were considered innovative and of high value for health care providers.  Among these initiatives one can find: the nutritional campaign “Salud Te Recomienda” (Your Health Department Recommends), “Muevete PR!” (Get Moving PR!), which later became “Puerto Rico en Forma” under the Sports and Recreation Department.  On the area of public policies he was closely involved in the Amendments to Law 40 to ban smoking in all public and private spaces in the Island, the development of the local law  which banned Trans Fatty Acids in all food items, the creation of the Alliance for Healthy, Active and Well-Nourished Kids, the establishment of the first health risk assessment of those living in disadvantaged and geographically isolated communities, and the establishment of the first smoking quit line in Puerto Rico.

Rivera-Saez has published numerous articles and book chapters in the area of public health and has served as a technical consultant and guest speaker for the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization.  In 2008, he transitioned to the private sector and became a consultant in preventive and clinical affairs for several companies. This transition also served as  a stepping stone into other areas of interest such as the interface between technology, information and health systems. In 2010, Waldert became a commentator on health issues for a local news channel. He also co-hosts a weekly radio show on Wellness and Health.
